Plums are often harvested commercially at an immature stage. These plums often lack the necessary Brix to provide optimum eating quality at destination. Immature plums are susceptible to water loss and shrivel. Virtually all plums available in the northern hemisphere are shipped from orchards in the southern hemisphere during the winter months which means that extensive travel time is necessary

The iFood packaging system can provide plums with an 8 to 10 week distribution window. In addition the plums can be harvested later as more mature fruit with higher Brix levels thatb improve the eating quality of the fruit. Commercial packing of Fortune and Royal Diamond plums in South Africa yielded excellent results when stored at -0.5-1°C.
